Once Human: How to Get Fuel? — Farming Guide for Way of the Winter [October Update]
Once Human throws you as a Meta-Human into a huge post-apocalyptic world where you must do anything to survive the day. As the game progresses, the players must craft various items, weapons, buildings, and vehicles to start thriving. However, most of the raw materials required for these recipes are located in distant regions. The good news is that you can ride your motorcycle to cover huge distances and even climb tall mountain ranges on your handy off-road truck. Just when things start getting better, you get the prompt that your vehicle is running out of juice, and the game doesn’t really explain how to get fuel.
So, fuel is an important resource in Once Human, required to power your vehicles and craft high-end weapons, misile turrets, and ammunition. Therefore, in this article, we will explain how to get fuel from various sources so that you never run out of this important resource, let’s get started:
Update: After the Once Human Update 1.3, we now have our Tar Pudding Deviation. This special Deviant automates our fuel refining facility. Check out the newly added content below for more details on this topic.

Blogs What is Fuel in Once Human?
Fuel is an important resource in Once Human, which is required to power your cars and motorbikes, and it is even used in various endgame recipes. Currently, fuel or gas comes in three forms, i.e., Crude Oil, Portal Mixed Fuel, and Barreled Premium Fuel. You can find the fuel in its crude form naturally, but you can’t use it in your vehicles without further processing. Furthermore, certain vehicles and recipes require fuel in its Premium form, which you can’t substitute with anything else.
Blogs How to Get Fuel in Once Human?
There is nothing worse than running out of gas in the middle of nowhere while you are far away from the nearest safe zone. Still, fuel is last in most players’ checklists despite its undeniable importance in your survival. So, if you find yourself constantly running out of this liquid juice, you are not alone! Fortunately, we have found multiple ways to get fuel and even process it into its Premium form to take away this burden from your shoulders.
Blogs Scavenge Fuel
The easiest way to get your hands on enough fuel to last for the day is to find it in the post-apocalyptic world. You will notice numerous abandoned vehicles on the roadside while traveling across Nalcott. While you can’t loot all these vehicles, the ones with intact trunks often yield a bottle or two of Portal Mixed Fuel. You can directly refuel your vehicles with this portable fuel and even survive until you find a better alternative.
The general rule of thumb is to loot every intact vehicle (not exploded) to get Portal Mixed Fuel and a couple of junk scraps. However, vehicles parked within safe zones and hamlets aren’t lootable even though they look like regular ones. So, you can easily identify the lootable vehicles by pressing the Q button (the unlockable ones are highlighted in white color). Once you find a vehicle, approach it and press the loot button to check if it has any spare Mixed Portable Fuel in its trunk. Similarly, you can also loot the crates inside military vehicles and trucks as they also have a chance to drop fuel.
Blogs Participate in Workshop Events
Another handy way to get your hands on some Premium Barreled Fuel is to participate in the Workshop Events. You can find these events in various Production Facilities and use your Extraction Permit to start the mini-game. Once you start the Workshop Event, you must build fortifications around the Extractor and protect it for the given time to earn your rewards. Once the Building timer runs out, your territory will get ambushed by waves of enemies and Elites (depending on the Extraction Permit Level).
Your objective is to keep the extractors safe until the timer runs out. Once you defeat all the attackers without inflicting too much damage to the Extractors, you will get your rewards, i.e., Barreled Premium Fuel and a few other collectibles.
Blogs Make your Own Fuel
Finally, the best way to get fuel in Once Human is to make your own from Crude Oil sources. You can find these locations marked with black spots all around the map, especially in the Blackfell Oilfields and Red Sands regions. Once you find a source, place a water pump close to it, connect it to a power source, and wait for it to start generating Crude Oil.
Next, build a refinery near the water pump, connect it to a power generator, and place the Crude Oil in the refining facility to get Portable Mixed Fuel. You can repeat this process as many times as you like, as the Oil Source never gets dry. However, it is a time-consuming task, and you are far from your desired passive fuel generating farm.
Blogs Once Human: Fuel Farming Guide
If you decide to go with your “Make your own Fuel” method, you should invest some time in building your own oil farm. Much like the Acid Farming Guide, this method requires you to shift your base close to an Oil Source. Next, open the Memetics Cradle and unlock the Water Pump under Logistics Tier 3 after you unlock Water Filters.
Secondly, you will need to unlock the Memetics for Fuel Refinery under Infrastructure Tier 2. Once you have these blueprints, you must place your base’s beacon near the Oil Source and build your Water Pump as close to the source as possible. You will need the following items to build a single Water Pump:
- 70x Standard Parts
- 25x Steel Ingot
- 20x Refined Parts
- 20x Carbon Fiber Fabric
- 20x Electronic Parts
Next, build a power generator near the building to power the entire operation. Usually, 2 to 3 Solar Power Generators or 1 Biomass Power Generator is enough for this Fuel Farm. Once you have a power source, connect it to the Water Pump using a connection module and wait for a few minutes to see the results. In most cases, the Water Pump will start generating Barreled Crude Oil when everything is functioning correctly. However, if the Oil Source is in the middle of a puddle, it may start yielding Dirty Water; in this case, you have no choice but to look for another source.
Once you get your Barreled Crude Oil, it is time to place your Fuel Refining Unit near the Water Pump. You can build your Oil Refining Facility by hovering over Facilities > Production Facilities and using the following ingredients:
- 25x Steel Ingot
- 10x Copper Ingot
- 10x Standard Parts
- 5x Electronic Parts
- 10W Electricity
Blogs How to Make Portable Mixed Fuel?
Unfortunately, normal pipes won’t carry Oil the same way as Water or Acid, so you must manually carry the yield to the Refining Facility. With everything in place and hooked to the Power Generator, it is time to wait for 5 minutes to get your first batch of Barreled Crude Oil. Next, collect 10x Barreled Crude Oil and place it inside the Refining Facility to get 1x Portable Mixed Fuel.
Blogs How to Make Barreled Premium Fuel?
You can either use this Mixed Fuel directly to power your vehicles or process it for a second time to get Barreled Premium Fuel. For this purpose, collect 50x Portable Mixed Fuel and place it in the Refining Unit to get 1x Barreled Premium Fuel. Keep in mind a single processing takes around 50 to 60 minutes to complete. So, you will be spending countless hours making your own Premium Fuel.
Blogs Use The Tar Pudding Deviation: [October Update 1.3]
The Once Human Way of the Winter patch comes with 7 new Deviants, and fortunately, Tar Pudding is in that list. Once you capture and place the Tar Pudding Deviation in its Isolated Securement Unit, it will automatically start collecting Crude Oil from nearby sources. Moreover, you can also assign it to one or multiple interconnected Oil Refining Facilities to automate the whole farming process.
This way, you will have a bunch of Portable Bottled Fuel whenever you return from a hefty campaign. Just don’t forget to connect everything together or else you will have to manually carry your refined fuel to the storage tanks. The fastest way to get this Deviation is to complete the quest for Lowe in Ember Strand during phase 2. In the meantime, there is a chance to drop Tar Pudding at the end of the Avalanche Monolith in Vena Fjord at around level 25 to 30.
Blogs How to Make Fuel Faster in Once Human?
We understand your urgency and dire need for Barreled Premium Fuel, and that’s why we have found the perfect way to save your time without compromising on efficiency. If you are lucky, you will get the Super Refinery Memetics Specialization at around character level 30 or 35. If you see this Specialization, drop everything and just pick this one as it is indeed a wise investment for the endgame sequence.
Basically, the Super Refinery offers the same functionality as a regular Refining Facility but drastically reduces the processing time (60 minutes vs. 30 minutes). A Super Refinery will also reduce the Portable Mixed Fuel required for Barreled Premium Fuel by half. Furthermore, a single Super Refinery has two input slots, meaning you can process Crude Oil and Refine Mixed Portable Oil at the same time.
Oh, and you can also place 10x Acid in a Super Refinery to get 5x Portable Mixed Fuel. However, we hardly recommend using your hard-earned Acid this way unless you own one of our Acid Farms.
Here is a quick difference between a Regular Refining Facility and a Super Refinery Unit:
Refining Facility | Crude Oil to Mixed Fuel | Mixed Fuel to Premium Fuel |
Regular Refining Unit | 10x Barreled Crude Oil will give 5x Portable Mixed Fuel in 60 minutes. | 50x Portable Mixed Fuel will give 1x Barreled Premium Fuel in 60 minutes. |
Super Refinery | 10x Barreled Crude Oil will give 5x Portable Mixed Fuel in 30 minutes. | 25x Portable Mixed Fuel will give 1x Barreled Premium Fuel in 30 minutes. |
Blogs Conclusion
There you have it, that’s about everything on how to get fuel in Once Human. Even though the farming guide isn’t as efficient as some of our other guides, it is the only working method with consistent Once Human fuel. Hopefully, you have learned something new today from our guide, be sure to check out the rest of the website for more such content. Stay Pumped!
