Hellblade 2 Senua's Story

Senua's Saga

Senua, a Pict warrior from Scotland around 900 AD, embarks on a haunting quest after her lover is killed. Believing his soul is trapped in the Norse underworld, she carries his head (believed to hold his soul) on a perilous journey to bring him back. The events of Hellblade unfold within this warrior's mind as she navigates the depths of Norse mythology and the afterlife.

Senua's journey takes her through perilous underworld landscapes. She confronts monstrous foes from myth, like the fire giant Surtr and the underworld goddess Hela. These figures likely symbolize Senua's deepest anxieties: Surtr representing her fear of destruction and fire, and Hela embodying the grief she carries. Each death she endures fuels the rot consuming her, mirroring her own paranoia that the player experiences firsthand. The characters and events – the raven god Valravn, the fiery Surtr, the legendary sword Gramr, the trials imposed by Odin, and the monstrous wolf – can all be seen as reflections of Senua's internal struggles or significant moments in her life.

Hellblade 2 Gameplay and Combat

Hellblade 2 Gameplay

Senua's combat gets a cool upgrade with new moves. My favorite ties into a powerful scene. We see a glimpse of her childhood home, triggering a memory. Young Senua used a small mirror to focus. Back in the present, this memory unlocks a new ability: using the mirror to slow down enemies for a devastating combo attack. It requires charging, so you can't overuse it, but it feels essential for tougher fights.

Hellblade Gameplay Combat

Activating focus creates a stunning visual – a burst of shimmering shards and runes encasing the enemy. It reflects the idea of Senua focusing completely, just like she did with her reflection as a child. In slow motion, Senua cuts through the enemy's shimmering prison, finishing them off with a primal scream. It's both beautiful and brutal. This new ability adds depth to combat, making it more strategic and thematically connected to Senua's story.

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice

Available on Steam

From the creators of acclaimed titles like Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, comes a harrowing journey into myth and madness. Set in the Viking Age, a Celtic warrior embarks on a visionary quest into the depths of Norse mythology to reclaim the soul of a loved one.
