Once Human: Temperature System Explained – How to Survive Extreme Temperature?
Once Human is slowly paving its way towards a realistic survival game. Initially, the game started as an arcade RPG with basic survival mechanics like hunger, thirst, and illness. However, with the launch of the Way of the Winter PvE scenario, Once Human now includes an environmental survival mechanism. So, players must learn how to survive extreme cold and heat while taking care of all of the previous stats. Sounds challenging, right?
Well, it is quite challenging to maintain a cozy ambient and body temperature all the time. However, once you learn how to survive these extreme temperatures, everything starts to feel the same as before. The only problem is that it is quite hard to maintain a balance between extreme cold and extreme heat, especially when all your tasks are scattered across the map. Therefore, in this article, we will explain the new Once Human Temperature Mechanics, how they work, and the best ways to survive them, let's start:

Blogs What are the Way of the Winter Temperature States?
Before we jump into all the different ways to survive extreme temperatures, it is imperative to first understand the basics behind this new mechanism. Basically, the new Season 2 regions are divided into extreme cold and extreme heat zones. Your job is to use all your resources, buildings, and consumables to maintain a perfect body temperature.
If the temperature drops below the cozy zone, you will suffer from Frostbite and will continue to lose HP, ultimately leading to instant death. Similarly, when playing in the heat regions, you can die from Heatstroke if the body temperature rises to Blaze. Furthermore, the temperature system is also incorporated into existing zones. However, its impacts are negligible in those areas, but most of the new seasonal tasks will send you to venture across the extreme temperature zones.
You can check your current ambient and body temperature from the thermometer icon in your inventory. Here is a list of all Temperature states in Once Human: The Way of the Winter Scenario and their respective effects:
- Frost (<-45°C): Metas with body temperature below -45°C will rapidly lose HP and die from Hypothermia. The Frozen state will stack after every 3 seconds, adding a -5 HP drop per second and reducing the movement speed. Lastly, the Meta will die instantly from Hypothermia after 4 stacks of Frozen (12 seconds).
- Chilly (-45°C to -15°C): Metas with these body temperatures will rapidly lose HP and body temperature, leading to Hypothermia. However, this state can be remedied with food, consumables, and cold-resistant clothing.
- Cozy (-15°C to 40°C): This is the optimum body temperature, and it won't affect the Meta's ability to perform any actions.
- Hot (40°C to 70°C): Metas within this temperature range will rapidly lose Hydration, and the body temperature will gradually increase, inflicting Heatstroke. However, it can be remedied with consumables, clothing, and the Dampened Status Effect.
- Blaze (>70°C): In the Blaze state, Metas will rapidly lose Hydration, and the Heatstroke will become more severe with every second. The Combustion debuff will stack every 3 seconds, and Metas will lose -5% HP per second and 1% gear durability. Again, the end result of this state is death by Heatstroke after 4 stacks of Combustion (12 seconds).
Blogs Ambient VS. Body Temperatures
The new Once Human 1.3 update adds two different types of temperature meters to your inventory. The Ambient temperature shows the environmental temperature, i.e., Hot or Cold Zones. This temperature is affected by regions, time of the day, weather, and seasonal events.
Any change in the Ambient temperature will directly affect your Body Temperature in Once Human. The Body Temperature thermometer shows the Meta's temperature State and its consequences. Say you travel from a Hot Ambient Zone to a Cold Zone; you must now change your gear and survival strategy, or else you risk dying from Hyperthermia and vice versa.
Blogs How to Survive Extreme Temperatures in Once Human?
Now that you know all about the new temperature mechanics and its hazards, it is time to learn what you can do to survive extreme temperatures. The main goal of this whole system is to maintain a Cozy body temperature.
So, it is best to keep an eye on the thermometer the same way you have been monitoring your Hunger, Hydration, and Sanity. If the temperature starts dropping then wear thick hide gear and use cold resistance consumables. Similarly, if it starts to get warmer and you reach the Hot state, then quickly change into summer gear and use appropriate consumables.
Also, it's unwise to settle in these Hot Climate Zones unless you are playing with at least 5 party members to keep the Thermal Tower fueled. Otherwise, it becomes very hard to maintain a Cozy temperature as you must constantly refuel your Thermal Structures.
Let's explore all the ways you can survive the extreme temperatures in Once Human 1.3:
Blogs Choose Appropriate Gear
Gear has always been an important element in almost every survival game, and Once Human is no different. Adding to the troubles, you must now hunt different types of animals like Reindeer and Bears to extract temperature-resistant hides. You can then use these raw hides to craft special pants and tops to resist extreme temperatures.
Similarly, keeping an eye on your gear is crucial as you must quickly change into either summer or winter gear to cope with the changing temperatures. Moreover, the update also includes Leftovers (unlocked by Leatherworking Memetics) that you can use to upgrade, repair, and maintain your gear items. So, collect as many Leftovers as possible and keep an eye on your gear's durability, as it will definitely impact your temperature resistance.
Lastly, you must change your gear according to your current region. For example, you must wear cold-resistant gear if you are traveling within icy Vena Fjord and Onyx Tundra. Similarly, the heat resistance gear will help you survive the scorching heat of Ember Strand.
Oh, and holding certain Weapons like the Torch and Northern Pike can also affect the Ambient Temperature. So, if you are in dire need of some heat within a Cold Zone, the Torch can partly remedy it, whereas holding on to the Northern Pike will give you a cold breeze in Hot Zones.
Blogs Temperature-friendly Foods
Certain food items have also been improved in the new Once Human update to improve temperature regulation. The right meal for the right condition can not only improve your temperature resistance but also remedy certain thermal illnesses.
In this regard, consuming crops that grow in Cold Zones, like Sunny Ginger, Polar Pepper, or Spikemato, will boost the Meta's cold resistance. Moreover, cooking recipes with these ingredients will further enhance their efficiencies and cure Status Effects.
On the contrary, you can harvest heat-friendly crops like Mint and Ice Melon from the Hot Zones. You can directly consume these ingredients or cook them in your dishes to get heat resistance and remedy heat-related illnesses to survive the fiery heat.
Blogs Swimming: Friend or Foe?
According to the Once Human 1.3 update patch notes, swimming in any water body will give you the Dampened State. This Status Effect will improve the Meta's ability to withstand extreme heat and maintain a Cozy State in Hot Zones. However, the Dampened State will reduce your cold resistance in Cold Zones and quickly inflict the Frozen State if you don't change into dry, cold-resistant gear.
Therefore, it is important to avoid swimming in icy Vena Fjord and Onyx Tundra, whereas swimming in the Ember Strand will improve your temperature regulation.
Blogs Build Temperature Control Structures
Another temperature-friendly addition to the Memetics Cradle is the Temperature Control Node. You can unlock these Memetics to unlock temperature-controlling structures like Campfire and Burning Oil Drums. Building these structures will maintain a Cozy temperature within a short radius.
Furthermore, you can also use your Vintage Cooking Stove to maintain warmth inside your base. Oh, and of course, the Thermal Towers Memetics further improves the conditions within a large radius. However, you can only build these Towers inside your own territory and then recruit up to 16 party members to maintain its fuel and benefit from the Cozy State. In any case, it is important to rely on these temperature control facilities or else you will either freeze to death or Combust into a well-done steak.
Blogs Tactical Tools
Last but not least, Once Human has also improved certain throwables and turned them into temperature-friendly items. For instance, you can now use the Frost Grenade to quickly reduce the temperature within a short radius. This throwable is not only useful in the Hot Zones but can also be used against enemies in Cold Zones. The same is the case with Molotov Cocktails and Thermite Grenades as you can use them to get some heat in the Cold Zones.
Furthermore, the game has also introduced two new seasonal items, i.e., Heatium and Coldium. You can use the Heatium to get +10 Cold Resistance and Frost Resistance for 60 minutes. Similarly, the Coldium will grant you +10 Heat Resistance and Burn Resistance for the next 60 minutes before shifting back into Thermoium.
However, you must unlock the Polar Expedition Memetics in the Memetics Cradle to acquire Thermoium. Next, use the following ingredients to craft Hetium and Coldium:
Heatium:
- Charcoal x20
- Thermoium x1
Coldium:
- Ice Cube x10
- Thermoium x1
Oh, and don't forget to unlock the Bed: Heat Preservation Memetics Specialization, as it grants you +30% Cold Resistance for 30 minutes after sleeping in bed for just 10 seconds.
Blogs Conclusion
The upcoming cold winter nights are about to become even colder with the Once Human: The Way of the Winter Scenario. Prepare to cover your Meta with the same blanket and crank up the heat in your base if you dare to survive in extreme temperatures. Hopefully, you have learned how to survive the extreme temperatures in Once Human temperature system. We encourage you to check out the rest of the website for more such content.
