Once Human: The Easiest Farming Guide Ever [Updated July 2024]
From taking down magical monoliths to conquering disputed territories and crafting your own vehicles to go around the map, you can do pretty much anything in Once Human. However, we can’t really ignore the survival-crafting mechanics even for a single day. Food and drinks being the most important factors that keep you sane, you must take care of your basic necessities almost all the time. While you can get by just fine and survive on junk food that you scavenge from various crates, it’s really not enough at the end of the day.
Fortunately, you can grow your own food and crops right at your base camp, thanks to the amazing farming system of the game. The only problem is that you don’t actually use your plantation baskets until you defeat the third major boss in the game. However, it is still a good idea to prepare and stock up on stuff that you will need later. Therefore, in this Once Human Farming guide, we will cover everything to get you started on automated farming, let’s start:

Blogs Once Human: Complete Farming Guide
Starting out as a meta human, you may feel like the world is at your feet. However, you are forced to face the reality after just a few hours, and that’s when you start feeling hungry and thirsty for some organic food. The only problem is that you can’t eat everything from the wild, and processed food is hard to come by. So, your only option is to either chew on whatever you can find from containers or grow your own food. If you choose the latter option, then we suggest that you start preparing for this task right away. Here is a step-by-step guide to farming in Once Human:
Blogs Unlock Planting
The first step is obviously to unlock all the necessary recipes to kickstart your farming project. For instance, you must first start with Dishes I under the Logistics Memetics Cradle Tree to access the second Tier upgrades. Next, you must progress the main story until you face the first main boss of the game and gain some skill points. With the new options available, you must now unlock Planting and Compost Bin recipes.
Now that you have learned how to make Loamy soil with spoiled food and boiled water, it is time to set up your Compost Bin. Simply collect the required materials and build the Bin in any corner of your base. Next, place the required materials to get as much soil as you need for your first few plantations. It would be best to keep your spoiled foods as they will come in handy once you learn how to make fertilizer in Once Human.
Blogs Get Plantation Boxes
For now, you have the basic technology to grow basic crops like potatoes and mushrooms in bare soil. However, our goal is to grow rarer plants like Morel and Peppercorn passively, and it seems that we are still a long way from there. In any case, we suggest that you keep visiting places like the Sunbury Middle School and the 73 Source Extraction Point to gather as many seeds as you can possibly get until you unlock the Tier 3 Logistic Memetics.
Oh, and don’t forget to participate in the game events and collect Silver Ores on the side to stack up your Energy Links supply. Once you have enough resources, open the Memetics Cradle and unlock Planter Boxes and Fertilizer I to officially start your farming project.
Blogs Sow your Seeds
Now that you have everything that you need for your first few plants, it is time to start crafting the Planter Boxes. Initially, we recommend that you only place 2 pots outside the camp (like on the balcony or maybe the open space within the boundaries). Basically, you must strategically place the Planters somewhere that receives sunlight throughout the day, as it is absolutely necessary for most crops. Next, head to the Compost Bin and collect the Loams that you have been saving up so far and use them at the intermediate workbench to craft fertilizers.
Finally, return to your Planter Boxes and sow whatever seeds that you wish to grow. Add fertilizer and water them regularly (boiled water makes them grow faster). Also, don’t forget to keep an eye on the plant’s conditions (water and sunlight) and make sure that they stay within the green or blue regions, or else your crops will fail. Hopefully, if you keep looking after your plants, you will receive your harvest within a few in-game days.
Blogs Automate the Farming
Now that we have an intermediate farming system, it is time to start working towards automation. This way, you can passively grow crops while focusing on other important activities. All you need to do is to sow your seeds and the automatic farming system will take care of everything for you. Here’s everything that you need to get an automated farming system in Once Human:
- Rainwater Collection: The first thing you need is a reliable water source that keeps collecting water to your base. You can unlock the Rainwater Collection System and Water Storage Tanks in the second tier of the Logistics Tab under the Memetics Menu.
- Water Filters: Also unlocked from the second tier of the Logistics Tab, this unit filters the collected rainwater before passing it to the water storage filters. Don’t worry, you don’t need any electricity for this mechanism, so keep working on your Solar Generators on the side.
- Water Pump: You will only need a water pump to provide water to your irrigation chambers if they are located at higher elevations from the tank. So, if you built the Water Storage Tanks on the roof, you are good to go, or else wait till you can finally unlock this Tier 3 upgrade from the Logistics Tab.
- Automated Irrigation: Now comes the fun part; this element is absolutely crucial for your automatic farming project. This system automatically sprinkles water over your crops, and you can adjust the gears according to the plant’s requirements. The only problem is that you must wait till Logistics Tier 4 upgrades before you can actually install this amazing machine in your base.
Grow Lights: While our strategy to place the Planter Boxes in open sunlight has been working so far, it just isn’t efficient enough for the food requirements. So, you can take your farm to the next level by adding a Grow Light on top of each box. This light basically provides nutrition to the plants even during the night when sunlight is unavailable. You can unlock Grow Lights at Logistics Tree Tier 4, along with the water sprinkle system.
Blogs Conclusion
That’s it! You now have an automatic farming unit right inside your base camp. All that’s left to do is to find the seeds for your favorite plants, read their requirements, and customize each unit according to their needs. Hopefully, you will now have more than enough raw materials to cook up your favorite meals like the Canned Seafood in Oil (yummy).
