Dragon Age: The Veilguard — All Companions Tier List

Time

Dragon Age Team Editor

No Dragon Age is complete without a party of companions, and The Veilguard is no different. Companions are the hearts and souls of your quest to take down the elven bosses, so you should take your time when choosing your partners. Fortunately, there are around 7 companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and recruiting them isn't hard as long as you pay attention to your quest journal.

However, you can only choose 2 companions for your party, and you must invest time and effort in personal quests to unlock their true abilities. So, even though you can swap your party members at any time outside the combat, a new companion means that you must spend even more time polishing them. That being said, some companions are stronger in combat, while others offer exceptional support. Therefore, it is important to choose the best companions that not only improve your build but also synergize with each other for maximum benefits. Don't worry; this Dragon Age: The Veilguard all companions tier list will help you form the perfect party, let's start:

Blogs Dragon Age: The Veilguard — All Companions Tier List

Currently, there are 7 potential companions in the Veilguard, 2 Warriors, 2 Rogues, and 3 Mages. It took us around 14 hours of gameplay to evaluate every companion in the new Dragon Age and put them in a tier. Our criteria were to check out each contender's personal skills, unique abilities, combat effectiveness, and combination with another companion. As you probably know, companions and players can trigger combos and chain attacks as long as they synergize with each other. So, we have also considered the possibility of various Dragon Age builds that you can create around each companion.

Note: Companion skills and abilities are subject to change in future Dragon Age patches. So, we will update this tier list whenever there is a Nerf or changes to the core skills.

Blogs S Tier

The S Tier contains the over-the-top best companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. These companions are extremely efficient in both combat and support roles. Moreover, they synergize very well with almost every participant and are universally suitable for all potential builds. In short, if you are looking for a smooth gameplay experience, you should drop everyone else and stick with these two options.

Blogs Lucanis Dellamorte

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Companions Tier List Lucanis

Class: Rogue

Abilities:

  • Abominate
  • Adrenaline Rush
  • Debilitate
  • Eviscerate
  • Soothing Potion

Lucanis Dellamorte is the top member of the Antivan Crows, an organization of Assassins. He is considered the shining star of his profession, and for good reasons. He is one of the only two companions in the game that deals Necrotic Damage with his dual-dagger attacks. Needless to say, Necrotic is the best type of damage to quickly fill up the Stagger bar and perform Take Downs to defeat some of the toughest enemies in the game.

Furthermore, you don't need to invest much time in bonding with this companion as he is easily viable with just a few interactions. Oh, and if you decide to stick with him for the entire playthrough, then you must focus on individual damage rather than area of effect. However, the enemies will drop at an alarming rate, so the area of impact won't be a problem in the later stages. Overall, Lucanis is the top choice for both early game and endgame stages as long as you shape your own character accordingly.

How to Unlock Lucanis Dellamorte?

You can unlock Lucanis Dellamorte as your companion by completing the Sea of Blood quest. This quest is accessible by speaking with Teia of the Antivan Crows in Treviso. Next, you must free the Demon of Vyrantium by breaking the barrier and then defeat The Fabricator, a mini-boss. Finally, break Lucanis's Blood Focus and defeat Calivan, the elven Mage boss. Don't forget to make the following choices back at the Crows Guild to gain Lucanis's approval:

  1. My condolences.
  2. There's got to be another way.
  3. This is not fine.
  4. I'll keep an eye on you.

Blogs Lace Harding

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Companions Tier List Lace Harding

Class: Rogue

Abilities:

  • Adrenaline Rush
  • Heavy Draw
  • Seismic Shot
  • Shred
  • Soothing Potion

Next up, we have Lace Harding, a returning character from Dragon Age: Inquisition and the only romanceable Dwarven Rogue in the game. She is a great choice as both your main attack companion and a support NPC for the entire party. Her Soothing Potions are powerful enough to fully restore your HP from zero to max. Furthermore, she uses Detonators to inflict damage on multiple enemies, making her a great option for Lucanis.

Secondly, her Seismic Shot ability alone is a game changer as she can deal heavy damage from a safe distance while providing support to all three members. We also found her to be extremely efficient in Crowd Control, as she can slow down enemies with her bow shots. Lastly, Harding is a great companion to pair with Lucanis or Davrin unless you wish to use Taash as a distraction while you and Harding do your thing.

How to Unlock Lace Harding?

Fortunately for us, Lace Harding is one of the three default companions that you unlock during the introductory quest, The End of the Beginning. During the quest, exit the bar and rendezvous with Lace Harding. Next, progress through the quest until you reach Solas's ritual site, and then make the following choices to unlock Lace for the next main quests:

  1. This is a mistake.
  2. Harding, with me. (Harding will get wounded and won't be available for the next major quest).

Blogs A Tier

The A Tier companions aren't the second-best options in this list. In fact, both of them are worthy of the S Tier; they are only ranked this way due to synergy limitations with certain roles. As for Davrin, we will promote him to the S Tier once BioWare improves it in the upcoming updates. So, if you aren't satisfied with the S Tier companions, feel free to opt for these A Tier candidates.

Blogs Emmerich Volkarin

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Companions Tier List Emmerich

Class: Mage

Abilities:

  • Entangling Spirits
  • Final Rites
  • Replenish
  • The Bell Tolls
  • Time Slow

Emmerich Volkarin is probably one of the most charming companions in the game. He is a Mage by class and specializes in Necromancy (yup, same as Diablo IV). During fights, he will summon undead minions to deal serious damage to multiple enemies. Furthermore, he is a great choice for a tank companion, and you can use his Replenish ability to transform him into a full-on support character.

In any case, Emmerich is a versatile character that you can add to any party and enjoy its benefits. However, the only reason why he didn't get a place in S Tier is because he is compatible with Warriors and Mages and doesn't get along in a Rogue-only party.

How to Unlock Emmerich Volkarin?

To unlock Emmerich Volkarin, you must progress through the main story until you have completed both On Deadly Wings and On Blighted Wings quests. Next, take up the Where the Dead Must Go quest and defeat all the enemies (including some undead weaklings and a few chilly Mages). Finally, light up the braziers just past the Sunken Star to summon the Consultant and then make the right choices to recruit Emmerich.

  1. He's precious (Mourn Watch option).
  2. Nice to have another Watcher (Mourn Watch option) or Promise you'll bring Manfred (both are approved by Emmerich).

Blogs Davrin

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Companions Tier List Davrin

Class: Warrior

Abilities:

  • Assan Strike
  • Battle Cry
  • Death from Above
  • Heroic Strike
  • In War
  • Victory

Davrin is one of the top members of the Grey Warden clan and a devoted caretaker of the Griffons. He is truly a "Fiercely Loyal" Warrior who knows how to take a beating and retaliate with double the strength. Moreover, Davrin knows how to attract the enemy's attention (Aggro), buying precious time for the entire party. So, if you are looking for a tanky character for your party, this one is surely a top-notch choice.

The reason why we placed him in our A Tier is due to his Crowd Control, Aggro, and Support characteristics. Adding to the fun, he also has a young Griffon named Assan (which means Arrow in Elven) that assists him in maintaining pressure over any large party. Unfortunately, Davrin does have a few flaws in the current game, but we are sure they will be solved in the upcoming updates. Overall, Davrin is a great companion for Rogues and Mages, and any party that has Harding in it.

How to Unlock Davrin?

The only way to unlock Davrin is to complete the A Warden's Best Friend quest for the Grey Warden faction. However, you won't get this quest unless you complete 'In Peace, Vigilance,' which is basically dialogue with no real consequences. Next, speak with Lace Harding and head to the High Anderfels to meet Davrin. Next, follow Assan to track down the missing Wardens, dealing with Darkspawns, The Frenzied Ogre, and The Gloom Howler. The Gloom Howler isn't really a boss fight, as you can easily skip it with dialogue. Here are the correct choices to recruit Davrin:

  1. Try it (The Gloom Howler, Davrin's approval).
  2. We help Treviso (Lucanis approval), or We help Minrathous (Neve approval).

Blogs B Tier

All Dragon Age: The Veilguard companions are powerful and offer unique traits for different playstyles. So, our goal was to evaluate them based on specific standards, an impossible job for our team. The B Tier companions are strong in either combat or support roles but not both, like the first two Tiers. Still, they have the potential to get recruited as long as you trim everything else accordingly.

Blogs Neve Gallus

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Companions Tier List Neve

Class: Mage

Abilities:

  • Blizzard
  • Glacial Pace
  • Icebreaker
  • Replenish
  • Time Slow

Neve is a trusted member of the Shadow Dragon guild and a powerful Ice Magic Mage. Her spells are great for Crowd Control and Detonator attacks. Moreover, you can use her Replenish skill to regain around 70% of your lost HP. So, she is a great candidate for the support role in your party.

However, she lacks combat skills and should never be used as the primary attacking companion. Secondly, her spells hardly synergize with any comp and non-Mage players. So, you should only consider her if you are looking for some variation in the party or if your character build requires Ice-based spells. Overall, Davrin seems like the only possible partner for Neve.

How to Unlock Neve Gallus?

Neve Gallus is the second default companion in the Veilguard. During the End of the Beginning quest, head Dumat Plaza after meeting with Lace Harding. Here, you must fight a group of Demons and then unseal the Ice Barrier to unlock Neve Gallus as your third party member.

Blogs Bellara Lutare

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Companions Tier List Bellara

Class: Mage

Abilities:

  • Enfeebling Shot
  • Fade Bolts
  • Galvanized Tear
  • Replenish
  • Time Slow

Bellara Lutare is the perfect example of someone who tried very hard to be the jack of all trades and failed. She is a Mage from the Veil Jumpers faction and draws power from The Fade. Moreover, you will unlock her as a companion early on in the game, making it hard to choose between her and your other magic companions. Initially, we thought she would rank in the same Tier as Lace Harding due to her diverse traits, but we were wrong.

She is a Mage who uses her gauntlets as a bow to deal lightning-based ranged damage. Furthermore, she has Crowd Control abilities and can partly heal the player. That being said, she isn't the master of either combat or support, making it hard to assign her a role in any party. That being said, if you really want to romance Bellara, you must partner her with someone like Lucinas to balance out the combat-support stats.

How to Unlock Bellara Lutare?

You will unlock Bellara Lutare during the In Entropy's Grasp after completing the introductory phase. Once you reach the Arlathan Forest, speak with the Veil Jumpers to learn about Bellara. Next, drop your injured companion and defeat the Elven Sentinel to progress. Finally, help Bellara deactivate the artifact by solving a bunch of puzzles and then defeat the Ogre boss to unlock her as your companion.

Blogs C Tier

We hate to say it, and some of you might disagree, but the C Tier is reserved for the Trash, I mean Taash. Even though this companion has unique skills, they aren't useful at all in either combat or support roles. So, unless the Devs improve this companion, we suggest that you avoid choosing her at all costs.

Blogs Taash

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Companions Tier List Taash

Class: Warrior

Abilities:

  • Dragon's Roar
  • Dragonfire Strike
  • Fire Breath
  • Fortune's Favor
  • Spitfire

Taash is the only Qunari companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. She specializes in hunting dragons and comes with many dragon-like abilities. The reason we placed her in the lowest position is that you don't get to experience her true powers until the endgame sequence, after many skill upgrades. On the other hand, all other companions are good right from the start.

However, if you are really enthusiastic about recruiting her, then you should focus on keeping her alive and pampered until you unlock most of her skill tree. Much like her personality, she wields dual-axes and breaths fire to damage multiple enemies. Furthermore, she is great at drawing Aggro of nearby enemies, buying you precious time to launch your own attacks. Overall, if you need her in your party, you should partner her with someone like Lace Harding or Emmerich to keep her alive while she does her thing.

How to Unlock Taash?

You will unlock Taash as your companion after completing The Dragon Slayer quest. This quest becomes available after the On Blighted Wings quest. Once you reach the area, speak with Taash and help her defeat the Deepstalkers and Deepstalker Matriarch. Finally, defend the Dragon against the Antaam and kill Flameseeking Karasaad to release the Dragon and recruit Taash.

Blogs Conclusion

Companions are extremely important in any Dragon Age game, and The Veilguard is no different. There are 7 companions available in the game, and you must choose only two of them to accompany you on your adventures. However, all of them are powerful and come with unique traits, making it hard to shortlist the best ones. Hopefully, this Dragon Age: The Veilguard companion Tier list will help you choose the best party members.
