Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is just around the corner, and we are super excited to share all the news updates we have gathered so far. Hellblade 2: Announcement and Release Date
Hellblade 2: Sauna’s Saga was announced during the Game Awards back in 2019. Everything went quite for a while until we heard from Ninja Theory in 2021. They provided some insights about the game’s settings, platforms, and a short gameplay trailer.
Finally, the Xbox Developer Direct gave news on 18th January 2024 that the game release is just four months away. At the time of writing this article, we are super excited to say that, May 21st is the officially confirmed release date for our beloved Hellblade 2.
Hellblade 2: Platforms
The original Hellblade was released back in 2014 when Ninja Theory was still an independent game studio. So, the game was initially released on PC, and PlayStation 4, followed by Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. However, the case of Hellblade 2 is a little different as Microsoft officially acquired Ninja Theory back in 2018. Therefore, the only confirmed platforms for playing Hellblade 2: Sauna’s Saga are PC. Xbox S, Xbox X, and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
There are still some doubts about whether or not Xbox One owners could play Hellblade 2 through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Similarly, we are more than sure that there won’t be a Hellblade 2 for PlayStation 4 or 5 owners on launch day. So, sorry PS owners, you got your years of God of War and The Last of Us, now it is Microsoft’s turn.
What to Expect from Hellblade 2?
From the initial gameplay footages and trailers, Hellblade 2 looks similar to the original game but with a few improvements. For instance, we anticipate more weapons (apart from the original two). Similarly, there will be giant, fire-bosses, better perception puzzles, and drastically improved graphics (it’s an Unreal Engine 5 game after all).
Similarly, Ninja Theory also announced that it wants the players to feel as if they “Just Scrapped Through”. So, we should expect improved combat mechanics, better move sets, brutal finishers, and maybe better chain combos. Apart from the “all-new-combat” system, the trailer also showed a failed giant trap, maybe it will become an integral part of the combat system.
Lastly, coming from a developer renowned for Devil May Cry and Enslaved: Odyssey, we can’t help but set the expectations bar too high for Hellblade 2. Hopefully, the new game will keep some interesting elements like narrative-driven progression, inner voices, and perception puzzles from the original game. Similarly, the game is expected to be a lot bigger than its predecessor and will include some open-world, RPG elements. However, we are just one day away from finding everything out.
Hellblade 2: Game Story
Fortunately for us, Ninja Theory spilled more than just gameplay updates during the Xbox Developer Direct event. According to them, Sauna will be more of a “beacon of Light” this time around. So, we expect her to be more of a freedom fighter than just a skilled girl trying to save her lost lover.
Previously, Sauna was a desperate girl carrying her lover’s skull in search of his soul from Helheim. However, she made peace with her past at the end of the original Hellblade. So, now she is on a suicide mission to seek revenge from the Viking Marauders in Iceland. She has also accepted her inner voices and uses them to blow fire into her vengeance. In short, Sauna will now travel through Nordic land, seeking her enemies and making various allies throughout her journey.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I play Hellblade 2 on launch day?
Yes, Hellblade 2 will become available to play on launch day on all supported platforms, i.e., PC, Xbox S|X, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Sadly, for PlayStation users, there aren’t any confirmed release plans and we don’t see them anywhere on the horizon.
Where to buy Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga?
Hellblade 2: Sauna’s Saga is currently available for purchase on Steam and Microsoft Store. Moreover, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play the game for free without any additional charges. However, you must pay the total $49.99 cost if you wish to fully own the game without any subscriptions. Lastly, Microsoft announced that the game will only be sold digitally and without any physical copies to maintain low costs.
Is there a Performance Mode in Hellblade 2?
Ninja Theory confirmed that Hellblade 2 will run only at 30 FPS on both the Xbox and PC versions. As the game doesn’t require higher FPS to deliver a smooth cinematic experience, so there is no need for a Performance Mode whatsoever. However, we still have great expectations from the PC modding community.
Conclusion
Hellblade 2 is planned to release on 21st May 2024, and it will surely be a big hit from Ninja Theory. The game is a sequel to the original Hellblade and continues the story from where Sauna made peace with her past. So, now we expect to see a vengeful Sauna, ready to take down the Viking Marauders in Iceland. Hopefully, this article has served its purpose in delivering everything we know so far about Hellblade 2: Sauna’s Saga.
