The Shadow of the Erdtree is finally here, and we are all super excited to discover what FromSoftware has in store for us this time. Fortunately for us, the new Elden Ring DLC comes with a plethora of new weapons, armor sets, skills, and our beloved incantations. While most of the new spells aren’t as powerful as endgame ones, you can still find a few decent incantations to boost your character build. In this regard, the Watchful Spirit is among the best spells to learn as soon as you enter the land of the shadows.

The Watchful Spirit is a passive incantation that deals high damage to all nearby enemies. Furthermore, it doesn’t really cost a lot of FP to cast this spell, making it your handy tool for the rest of the expansion. The only problem is that this spell is pretty well hidden in plain sight, making it hard to find on your own. Therefore, this article explains how to get the Watchful Spirit incantation in Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, let’s get started:

How to Get Watchful Spirit Incantation in Shadow of the Erdtree?

The Watchful Spirit incantation is hidden near the mid-game sequence in the new expansion. So, if you have just started the Shadow of the Erdtree, we recommend that you keep playing until you have reached the Belurat, Tower Settlement dungeon. Next, you must find a secret NPC and defeat one of the toughest bosses in the game to get your reward. Here is a step-by-step guide to acquiring the Watchful Spirit incantation in Elden Ring:

Get the Storeroom Key

Watchful Spirit Small Private Altar

You can only get the Watchful Spirit incantation from a secret NPC who resides inside a secret storeroom. Unfortunately, this room is locked from the inside, and its key is nowhere to be found from nearby guards. To get the Storeroom key, start at the Small Private Altar Site of Grace near the Belurat, Tower Settlement dungeon. If you haven’t discovered this Lost Grace, simply head to the Main Gate Cross Grace and go northeast to reach the Tower Settlement. Next, go around the stony path and turn right to find the Small Altar Site of Grace.

From the Small Altar, take the right door and follow the staircase until you reach the central fountain. Next, turn right and go around the ruined structure while ignoring all enemies in your way (there will be loads of them). Keep following the path and then again turn right and go inside the dark room. Finally, climb the ladder in front of you and loot the corpse right ahead of the ladder to get your Storeroom Key.

Speak to Hornsent Grandam

Once you have the Storeroom key, fast-travel back to the Small Altar Site of Grace or trace your steps back if you wish to grind some XP along the way. Either way, this time, turn left, follow the second door from the Grace, and go across the bridge. Again, you will find quite a few enemies on your way, including a powerful sorcerer. Fortunately, you can easily avoid all of them if you keep running without looking back.

After crossing the bridge, turn left and use your Storeroom Key to unlock the wooden door. You will find the Hornsent Grandam sitting with her head down in one corner of the room. The easiest way to find her is to turn right from the entrance and keep going until you find the mysterious figure. This NPC will tell you a bit of the lore and the sad story of how these lands used to be so great. In any case, she tasks you with slaying the Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss, and that’s where we will be going next.

Defeat the Divine Beast Dancing Lion Boss:

The Divine Beast Dancing Lion is one of the most dangerous bosses in the new Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. While you can fight this boss quite early in the game, we really don’t recommend it, considering his high damage output. However, by the time you unlock the Settlement Tower, you will have enough incantations and resources to help you during the fight.

Watchful Spirit Rooftops

To find the Divine Beast Lion boss, head back to the corpse where you found the Storeroom Key. Next, go through the door in front of you and keep going upstairs until you reach a dead end. At the end of this path, turn right and go over the rooftops until you reach the Large Hall. Finally, go upstairs on the second set of stairs until you find the large door with a Golden Summon on its left side.

Basically, the best way to cheese around the Dancing Lion boss is to use the golden summon that you can find just ahead of the boss fight arena. Also, you can use your favorite Spirit Ashes throughout the fight to some of the lion’s aggro, but you can’t really fully rely on them. Lastly, this boss is vulnerable to fire, bleed, and Scarlet Rot, so make sure to use the weapons that utilize these buffs. Oh, and you can use the Pearldrake Talisman to survive during the second phase of the fight, we found it pretty useful to dodge the lightning attacks.

Watchful Spirit Beast Head

Defeating the Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss will drop the Divine Beast Head that you can wear it as a helmet. That’s it! You have just got what you were looking for, see you next time, just kidding, we still have to get our incantation.

Now that you have defeated the Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss, it is time to get your beloved incantation from Hornsent Grandam. Simply use the fast-travel option to return to the Small Altar Site of Grace and again go across the bridge on the right side of the room. Finally, climb the stairs and basically return to where to found the Grandam NPC in the first place. Speaking with the NPC will launch another cutscene, and you will receive your Watchful Spirit incantation after exhausting this dialogue.

Oh, and don’t worry, you still get to keep your favorite lionhead helmet and feel like Hercules for the rest of the game (even though it doesn’t grant any boosts).

How to Use the Watchful Spirit Incantation?

Watchful Spirit How to Use

Fortunately, you don’t need to climb Mount Everest to learn how to use your newly acquired powers. All you need is 26 points in the Faith stat, an empty quick-access slot, and a recharged Focus Points bar. Keep in mind that the Watchful Spirit doesn’t start attacking right after you summon it. So, it would be best to use this incantation a few seconds before you start the fights.

Secondly, the Watchful Spirit costs 12 FP and 20 Stamina whenever you use it. Even though the cost isn’t really as high as the Pest-Thread Spears, you must still use it wisely as you might need some other spell mid-fight. Personally, we have gotten very fond of this incantation, and we like to carry it around as our virtual companion even if there are no nearby enemies.

Conclusion

That’s it! You have just learned how to get the Watchful Spirit in the new Shadow of the Erdtree Elden Ring DLC. Feel free to carry the magical skull around as your virtual assistant, and ow, boy, does it look good with the Young Lion Armor Set.
